Reach Out and Read is a nationally recognized non-profit organization dedicated to promoting literacy in children through the placement of age appropriate books in pediatric offices across the country. The organization encourages parents to read to children while they wait to see the pediatrician during regular office visits. By “prescribing” reading to young patients, participating pediatricians contribute to the promotion of literacy in their communities. Children who are forced to live in literature deprived environments are more likely to experience low grades, a high rate of missed classes, trouble with authority figures, substance abuse, and pregnancy. CPMG pediatricians are active supporters of Reach Out and Read and currently work to promote literacy in CPMG affiliated offices throughout the San Diego area.

Each year Reach Out and Read hosts Read and Romp, a family event designed to encourage parents to be more active in the promotion of literacy among their children by reading to them and encouraging activities that make reading fun. This year, Read and Romp 2011 will be hosted at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego. The events and activities are best suited for children ages eight and under and include face painting, snacks, live readings, and other activities based on well known children’s books. There will be a raffle for prizes and a silent auction for the adults. Raffle and auction tickets will be on sale at the door for $5 each, or 5 tickets for only $20. All proceeds from Read and Romp 2011 will benefit the literacy programs of Reach Out and Read San Diego.

Read and Romp is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 9am to 12pm. The cost of admission to the event is only $25 per person or $75 per family of 4 and $20 per additional family member. Admission also includes a continental breakfast and free admission into the rest of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.
